More than just music...

Yesterday, author Sarah Layden and voiceover artist / radio personality Melissa Davis (WFYI 90.1FM) stopped by the studio to work on a demo for the audiobook of Sarah's debut novel Trip Through Your Wires. If you like murder mysteries with a dash of coming-of-age angst, be sure to grab a copy of the book.

Bonus: Indianapolis residents will no doubt recognize many of the places featured in the novel.

I'm very excited to be working on this project as both producer and engineer and can't wait to share more with you all soon!

New live jazz recording from the Smedt Hanan Teng trio in Los Gatos, CA

Here's a tasty live track from the Smedt Hanan Teng jazz trio. We recorded this live at Great Bear Coffee in Los Gatos, CA a few months ago. It was a very simple setup--just three mics and three great players! Enjoy!

Give the Gift of Memories to Mom and Dad this Spring!

Free full-color, on-disc printing for every project!
Mother's Day and Father's Day are coming around soon, and do you know what makes a great gift? Memories. Specifically, the memories stored away on those old VHS tapes, cassettes, and other analog media you probably don't even have a player for!

Why not let us bring your old analog memories into the digital age?

We gladly offer transfer services for all kinds of video and audio media, and at very reasonable prices. We'll take those old, dusty tapes and records and give them new life as CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays or even computer files you can share online!

Head over to our Transfers page and then call or e-mail us to set up a drop-off appointment!

High-Definition Audio: What do you think?

In this article, Mario Aguilar of the tech blog Gizmodo lays out some interesting reasons why he thinks master-rocker Neil Young's high-definition Pono player isn't worth the time and money. As an audio engineer, I can verify that most of the science he points to is accurate.

That said, I also know that--especially in a controlled studio environment--you CAN tell the difference between something recorded at, say, 24-bit, 44.1kHz and 24-bit, 192kHz. Is that enough to warrant spending hundreds of dollars on a portable music player? Not for me, personally. In fact, my ears tend to prefer sample rates closer to 48kHz for listening. For some reason, I feel like 192 fatigues me quicker over long hours of tracking and especially mixing. (And I won't even get into the richness of analog tape vs. digital here! :-) )

What do you think?
Is there a place for high-def audio in the age of the MP3?
Can you even hear a difference?
Is it worth paying for?

We have Pro Tools 11 -- the world standard in recording and mixing!

Perfect Mix is proud to offer our clients a new, cutting-edge recording platform--Avid's Pro Tools 11, the worldwide standard in professional recording.

You've heard it on nearly every major album and single released in the last several years and now you can use it yourself when you come to Perfect Mix.

And because Pro Tools is the industry standard, that also means your projects can easily travel with you to almost any major recording studio in the world.

Lay down your drum tracks at Abbey Road in London, record your piano part on Bill Evans' personal 9' Yamaha grand at Fantasy Studios in San Francisco, track your guitars at Blackbird in Nashville, then bring your project files over here for final vocals and mix-down.

Wherever you live and wherever you work, we're right there with you!

Live and acoustic with McHaLo

Tonight marked the second night of tracking for acoustic trio McHaLo, which takes their multi-cased name from its three members: Grant McClintock, Brian Haan, and Regan Long. While the last session saw them laying down a hip, smooth cover of Outkast's "Hey Ya," tonight they dove into one of their originals, a jangly, mandolin-flecked tune in 3/4 time called "Saint". (To this engineer's ears, it recalled a bit of The Band, The Rolling Stones, and/or Counting Crows.)

Below are a few shots from the session, taken by Mr. McClintock.

Regan and Brian listen to a playback.

Producer/engineer Gabriel Harley making some fine adjustments.

(The honey was for his not-pictured cuppa.)

track and one backing vocal.)
